Anxiety Treatment Center in Atlanta, Georgia

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common among people, affecting over 31% of Americans at some point in their life (and this doesn’t include undiagnosed individuals). Though the term “anxiety” is often used to describe stress in today’s world, the effects that anxiety disorders have on people can be detrimental. Seeking help and anxiety treatment in Atlanta is often the first step toward overcoming anxiety and learning how to manage it.

Understanding Anxiety

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition that is characterized by intense feelings of fear and worry. The overarching term “anxiety disorder” encompasses so much more than just generalized anxiety disorder, or GAD. It also includes:

  • Agoraphobia
  • Specific Phobia
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)
  • PTSD
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder

Each of these disorders has different symptoms, so seeking professional assessment is often critical to determine what type of anxiety disorder you may be suffering from and how to best treat it.

In general though, people suffering from an anxiety disorder may struggle with:

  • Excessive worry or fear
  • Irritability
  • Panic Attacks
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Sleep problems
  • Feeling on edge or tense consistently
  • Sweating
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Unable to make decisions
  • Rapid heartbeat

Though there is no one cause of an anxiety disorder, research has found that there may be a genetic component to the diagnosis. Children of parents with anxiety are more likely to develop the condition, and people whose brains struggle to produce certain neurotransmitters are also more likely to have anxiety.

Anxiety disorders may also develop as the result of certain environmental factors, like trauma, or medical conditions, like thyroid problems.

In some cases, anxiety may develop as a symptom of substance abuse, and vice versa. Many people abuse medications, both prescription and illegal, to deal with the uncomfortable symptoms that might be present from the anxiety. Either way, co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis substances make anxiety worse, and anxiety makes substance abuse worse.

Treatment programs that are specific to anxiety disorders are the most effective way to address uncomfortable symptoms associated with the diagnosis. Unfortunately, anxiety disorders tend to be lifelong challenges, but learning your triggers and finding effective coping skills that address those triggers makes the disorder simply that: a challenge that you can learn to deal with.

At Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery, we offer access to several outpatient programs, providing our clients with customizable services that address their individual needs.

Partial Hospitalization Program

Our most intensive level of care is our PHP. Clients enrolled in this treatment plan will participate in services five days a week for approximately four hours each day.

Because this is our highest level of care, clients work with their treatment providers to determine which services will be most effective. Available anxiety treatment options that we offer at Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery include a combination of evidence-based and holistic services, such as:

  • Individual Therapy
  • Group Therapy
  • Family Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Medication Management
  • Mindfulness Training
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Various forms of Psychotherapy
  • Aftercare Planning

Clients will also have access to a variety of holistic treatment options, such as yoga, horse therapy, skills training, exercise, and more. These help clients develop skills that set them up for success in their daily life outside of treatment.

Engaging in a variety of services creates the most effective treatment for men, women, and adolescents suffering from symptoms of anxiety. These interventions allow our clients to understand where their anxiety stems from, determine what triggers are in their life, and develop coping skills and positive habits that are used as lifelong management of their anxiety.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our next step down from PHP is our IOP program. We designed this program specifically for:

  • Men and women who cannot commit their entire week to treatment because or work or family obligations
  • Men and women who have already completed inpatient or PHP and want to gradually step down from intensive treatment to more flexible services

This program requires clients to be available for at least three days out of the week for only a few hours and typically involves a combination of individual therapy and support groups. Clients may also be asked to bring their loved ones to family therapy as well.

Outpatient Treatment

Our lowest level of mental health treatment is our outpatient program. This is typically offered to men and women who have completed higher levels of care and are simply looking for continued support as they ease back into their lives.

Outpatient care may include an hour of individual therapy as well as some support groups, and the consistency of these services depends on the specific client and recommendations from their treatment team.
