Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Georgia

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a key component in a well-rounded continuum of care. This type of therapy centers on the connection between feelings, behaviors, and thoughts. The objective is to assist individuals in replacing unhealthy thought patterns with positive ones through practiced strategies. For those looking for cognitive behavioral therapy in Georgia, Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery can help. Our team understands the complexities associated with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders and is committed to guiding clients toward a better and brighter tomorrow.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a commonly used therapeutic approach that centers on identifying and altering negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional distress. By assisting individuals in recognizing and challenging unhealthy ways of thinking, CBT aims to improve an individual’s emotional responses while encouraging them to develop healthier coping strategies.

CBT is structured and goal-oriented, often involving practical exercises and skills training to address conditions such as mental health disorders, addiction, and alcoholism. Through this mode of therapy, participants learn to manage their thoughts and behaviors more effectively. This results in improved mental well-being and better recovery outcomes.

What Can Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Treat?

Cognitive behavioral therapy can be used to treat a variety of disorders. These include mental health conditions, substance use disorders, and alcoholism. Additionally, our programs can address co-occurring addiction and mental illness, which is also referred to as dual diagnosis. Mental health disorders that can be improved through CBT include but are not limited to:

How Does CBT Work?

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Georgia works by helping individuals recognize and change unhealthy thought patterns and behaviors that are linked with emotional pain. It involves a collaborative process where the therapist and client work together to uncover and understand these patterns. Through structured sessions, clients learn to identify distorted thinking before challenging and reframing these thoughts. This aids clients in building practical skills for more effective management of their emotions and behaviors.

CBT often includes exercises and strategies to apply these skills in real-life situations. The goal of this is to improve overall mental health and problem-solving capabilities.

What to Expect During A CBT Session?

During a CBT session, an individual can expect a structured and collaborative process where they and their therapist work with one another to address specific issues. Sessions typically start with a discussion of a person’s current concerns as well as the progress they have made since the last meeting. The therapist may then guide them in identifying negative thought patterns and behaviors before implementing exercises that challenge and reframe these harmful thoughts. Additionally, they may practice newly learned coping skills and set goals for applying these strategies to real-life situations. It is not uncommon for CBT sessions to include homework assignments that reiterate the learned skills and help them keep up with the progress they have made.

Our Treatment Programs That Utilize CBT

Each of our outpatient programs includes CBT. This is because this therapeutic modality has a plethora of benefits and helps an individual establish maintainable strategies to handle triggers and combat relapse. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery integrates CBT into the following types of programming:

A PHP is the highest level of treatment offered at Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery. PHP sessions operate five days a week, with each session lasting approximately four hours. As with all of our outpatient programs, clients return to their homes or a sober living facility in the evenings.

IOPs are typically used as a transition from more structured treatment. It provides clients with a nurturing environment in which they can strengthen their position in recovery. Participants go to IOP sessions three to five days a week, with each session lasting a few hours.

Traditional outpatient programming allows clients to integrate back into society while still receiving support. We hope to equip our clients with the coping skills they need to achieve lasting recovery.

During OP, clients attend one individual therapy session per week with the option to add 1-2 group sessions for a total of 3-4 hours. However, each session must occur on a different day of the week.
