Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by alternating episodes of mania and depression. Those with this condition experience extreme fluctuations in mood. While in manic or hypomanic states, individuals may feel overly energized, euphoric, or uncharacteristically irritable. During this type of episode, those with bipolar often engage in dangerous and impulsive behavior. Alternatively, depressive episodes are marked by deep feelings of sadness, a lack of motivation, and a loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities or hobbies.
Given the unpredictable nature of bipolar disorder, it can be difficult for individuals to hold down a job, maintain healthy relationships, or achieve the goals that they have set. In many cases, this condition inhibits an individual’s overall ability to function in daily life. Fortunately, bipolar disorder can be treated with a combination of therapy and medication at bipolar treatment facilities in Georgia.
A person showing signs of bipolar disorder requires professional intervention in order to live a fulfilling life. If an individual or their loved one thinks they may have bipolar disorder, it is crucial to seek help as quickly as possible. This condition often causes risky behaviors, which can have severe, even deadly consequences. It can be difficult for those in the throes of mania or depression to identify these episodes. Therefore, it is important to seek an assessment even if you are not positive you have bipolar disorder. It is also imperative to keep an eye on loved ones who are at risk.
There is no direct cause of bipolar disorder. However, several risk factors can play a hand in the condition’s development. These include genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological predispositions. Bipolar disorder typically surfaces during a person’s late teens or early twenties.
