Depression, also known as depressive disorder, is a serious and distressing type of mood disorder. This condition is defined by persistent feelings of melancholy, hopelessness, and a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities. Depression impacts a person’s thought process, behavior, and, generally, how they function in daily life. In many cases, those with this mental illness experience emotional and physical problems that can disrupt their relationships with loved ones, their work environment, and even their overall well-being.
Depression is considered common. In fact, according to NIMH, around 21 million adults in the U.S. have at least one major depressive episode each year. While the root causes of depression vary by person, this condition is typically the combined result of a multitude of psychological, biological, environmental, and genetic factors.
