EMDR Therapy Georgia

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of experiential therapy that has proven effective in treating a wide range of mental health and substance use disorders. This innovative modality allows individuals to address their trauma and improve their emotional resilience. As a result, they are able to not only achieve but maintain a meaningful life of sobriety. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery understands the value in EMDR Therapy in Georgia, which is why we integrate it into our comprehensive outpatient treatment programs.

What is EMDR Therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an experiential treatment strategy developed to aid individuals in processing and resolving traumatic experiences and emotional distress. This innovative method was designed by Francine Shapiro and involves an eight-phase approach. During this, clients focus on upsetting memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation—typically accomplished through guided eye movements.

This process allows individuals to reprocess and reframe traumatic experiences, therefore reducing the emotional toll linked with these memories. This encourages healing as it allows clients to confront negative beliefs and, ultimately, move forward from their past traumas. EMDR has proven especially beneficial for those with conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression. It also helps those struggling with substance use disorder as it addresses the underlying causes of their addiction.

What Are The Dangers of EMDR Therapy?

While EMDR is widely regarded as effective and safe, it can pose risks for certain clients. It is possible for physical symptoms such as headaches or dizziness to surface as a result of the bilateral stimulation. Additionally, individuals may encounter temporary increases in emotional distress as vivid memories can return during treatment.

As with any treatment modality, Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery will evaluate if EMDR is the right course of treatment for a person’s specific condition. Furthermore, our highly qualified and experienced therapists will look out for and mitigate any adverse effects during treatment.

How Can EMDR Help with Addiction?

Those struggling with substance use disorder can benefit from EMDR as it confronts the fundamental causes and emotional problems that often contribute to drug and alcohol addiction. By targeting and reprocessing painful memories and unhealthy thought processes related to traumatic experiences, this treatment allows clients to reduce the emotional triggers that may drive their addiction.

EMDR also helps in diminishing the symptoms of anxiety, stress, and depression that are often associated with substance use disorders. Consequently, EMDR improves coping skills, promotes emotional resilience, and supports continued recovery.

How Can EMDR Help Mental Health?

EMDR Therapy in Georgia can greatly improve mental health by identifying and resolving traumatic memories and emotional turmoil. By targeting unpleasant memories, EMDR helps alleviate symptoms of mental health disorders. These include PTSD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and panic disorder. Furthermore, this experiential therapy supports emotional regulation by showing clients ways to manage and cope with challenging emotions. This guides individuals in moving past their traumas and negative experiences.

How Can EMDR Help Depression?

Depression can be improved by EMDR as it reduces the distressing memories and unhealthy beliefs that often add to a person’s depressive symptoms. It enhances mood regulation, teaches problem-solving strategies, and alleviates emotional burdens. In turn, clients are able to establish a more positive outlook.

How Can EMDR Help Anxiety?

EMDR assists in decreasing anxiety symptoms by allowing a person to process their damaging past experiences and altering their negative thought patterns. This approach is essential in improving emotional regulation and lowering stress.

How Long Does EMDR Therapy in Georgia Last?

The length of EMDR is dependent on a person’s specific needs and the severity of their trauma. This timeline is also affected by their treatment goals and reevaluated as they continue to make progress. In most scenarios, EMDR therapy lasts between six to 12 sessions. However, it is worth highlighting that some instances may require less or more sessions. Typically, each session lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

Side Effects of EMDR

As aforementioned, EMDR is regarded as safe. However side effects may surface in certain individuals. These may include:
It is important to note that these complications are usually short-lived and tend to lessen as EMDR sessions progress.

How Do We Utilize EMDR In Our Treatment Programs?

In our outpatient treatment programs, we utilize EMDR to approach trauma in an effective and unique way. We begin our sessions by conducting a thorough evaluation. During which, we are able to identify the specific trauma an individual has endured and the negative beliefs that require addressing. Our addiction and mental health experts then guide clients through the structured EMDR process.

At Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery we offer EMDR as part of a full suite of services. It is integrated into an individual’s personalized treatment plan alongside other therapeutic modalities in order to promote overall healing and improved emotional health. We offer comprehensive outpatient programs in Marietta, GA. These include:

A structured form of treatment that requires attendance five days a week for around four hours a day.
A supportive, yet flexible type of programming. Clients attend IOP sessions three to five days a week for a few hours at a time.

During OP, clients attend one individual therapy session per week and can add 1-2 group sessions for a total of 3-4 hours of programming. However, each session must take place on a different day of the week.
