Dialectical Behavioral Therapy in Georgia

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of evidence-based treatment for those who experience emotions on a very deep level. This comprehensive approach assists clients in developing the tools they need to manage emotions and improve relationships. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery offers DBT as part of our extensive outpatient programming. The ultimate goal of our dialectical behavior therapy in Georgia is to promote long-term emotional stability and continued well-being.

What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavioral treatment intended to assist individuals in handling intense emotions and improving interpersonal relationships. This therapeutic modality was developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan and combines traditional cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. Specifically, it centers on the balance between acceptance and change.

DBT aims to teach skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. It typically includes individual therapy, group skills training, and even phone coaching as we want to support clients in applying their newly-formed skills into their daily lives.

How Does DBT Treatment in Georgia Work?

At Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery, our dialectical behavior therapy in Georgia follows a structured approach. This consistency helps individuals to manage emotional challenges and overall better their quality of life. DBT emphasizes the relationship between a client and their therapist. Clients work one-on-one with their assigned professional to confront personal issues, set goals, and apply the skills they learn in treatment to their specific situations.

Group skills training is a facet of DBT that focuses on teaching mindfulness, stress management, emotional regulation, and effective interpersonal skills. Furthermore, it provides a nurturing and supportive environment conducive to learning and practicing therapeutic strategies. Phone coaching is another important aspect of this therapy as it provides clients real-time support as they apply DBT skills in real-life situations.

How Long Does Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Last?

In general, dialectical behavior therapy in Georgia lasts between six months and a year. However, the exact length can vary based on a person’s specific needs and treatment goals. The therapy is typically separated into phases. The first is skill-building in areas such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Once a person has a firm foundation in DBT, the focus shifts to confronting specific behavioral issues and improving overall well-being.

Additionally, some participants may require further support and continue DBT for an extended period of time. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery prioritizes the individual needs of our clients and personalizes our programming to align with each person’s progress and objectives.

This is our most intensive outpatient level of care, featuring sessions five days a week, each lasting around four hours. Clients return to their homes or a sober living environment each evening, maintaining a structured treatment routine.
Designed as a step down from more intensive treatment, our IOP provides a supportive setting where clients can strengthen their recovery. Sessions are held three to five days a week for a few hours each, allowing individuals to live at home or in a supportive setting while continuing their progress.

Our traditional outpatient program supports clients as they transition back into everyday life. It focuses on helping individuals acquire and apply coping skills essential for long-term recovery while still receiving therapeutic support.

Clients attend one individual therapy session per week with the option to add 1-2 group sessions for a total of 3-4 hours during OP. (Note: clients must attend each session on different days of the week).
