Georgia Trauma Therapy

Trauma is often a contributing factor in the development of addiction and co-occurring mental illness. It can stem from many painful experiences; the effects of which are often long-lasting. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery Georgia trauma therapy allows people to learn healthy ways to address and cope with their trauma. It is our ultimate goal to help our clients achieve ongoing symptom relief and sustainable sobriety.

What Is Trauma Therapy?

Trauma therapy focuses on the aftermath of traumatic experiences. This trauma can be rooted in childhood, a recent incident, or an ongoing series of events. There can be many painful memories and unhealthy thoughts associated with trauma. Those who have survived it may blame themselves or feel a deep sense of guilt. It is also common for them to suppress it because they feel embarrassed or ashamed of the incident(s).

The purpose of trauma therapy is to encourage individuals to face these difficult feelings and address the emotional impact trauma has had on them. Our trauma therapy in Marietta, GA provides a nurturing environment in which clients can feel safe and secure as we support them in tackling distressing topics.

How Long Does Trauma Therapy Take?

The duration of trauma therapy depends on a variety of important factors. These include the severity of the individual’s trauma, the individual’s exact treatment goals, and the type of therapy program they are participating in. Typically, short-term trauma therapy might last for a few months. However, more complex cases may need a year or more of trauma treatment. Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery personalizes our clients’ timelines to ensure we meet their exact needs. We also continue to evaluate those in trauma therapy to mark their progress and see if their timeline needs to be adjusted.

How Does Trauma Affect MentaI Health

Traumatic events can severely impact mental health, leading to many complications and emotional repercussions. PTSD stems from unresolved trauma and causes difficulties for many veterans as well as those who have been victims of abuse, in serious accidents, encountered natural disasters, or witnessed horrifying events. Other disorders can be linked to trauma such as anxiety, depression, and panic-disorder. This occurs because the emotional effects of trauma are lasting and negative feelings are quickly triggered by these troublesome memories.

How Does Trauma Affect Substance Use Disorder

Trauma can increase an individual’s likelihood to overconsume alcohol and misuse harmful substances. This is because the symptoms cause difficult emotions, anxiety, and copious amounts of stress. Unfortunately, it is common for individuals to turn to drugs and alcohol as a means to self-medicate. They feel this numbs their problems, allowing for a temporary escape. However, the problem is that this truly is only a temporary solution. Treating trauma at its source is the only constructive way to find healing and restore both physical and mental wellbeing.

Our Trauma Therapy Programs in Marietta

When an individual begins one of our Georgia trauma therapy programs, we start with a comprehensive assessment to understand the extent of their trauma and identify any environmental, genetic, or psychological factors contributing to their distress. This initial evaluation helps us tailor the most effective treatment plan for each individual, guiding them towards meaningful healing. We provide various levels of outpatient programming to ensure appropriate care throughout each stage of the therapeutic process.

Outpatient Program (OP): Our OP is the least intensive level of care, designed to support individuals as they reintegrate into daily life following trauma therapy. This program allows clients to maintain jobs, attend school, and manage family responsibilities. This makes an OP an ideal final step as they integrate back into their routine.

During OP, clients attend one individual therapy session per week. They also have the option to participate in 1-2 group sessions for a total of 3-4 hours of programming. However, clients must attend each session on different days of the week.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our IOP serves as a transitional phase between more intensive therapy and greater personal freedom. Clients participate in sessions three to five days a week for a few hours each day. This program, which operates during weekdays, allows individuals to live at home or in a supportive environment while receiving continued care.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Thoroughbred Wellness and Recovery PHP offers a highly structured treatment environment with consistent support while still providing flexibility. Participants may return to a trigger-free home environment if it’s safe, or they might opt to stay at a sober living facility. PHP sessions are held five days a week, lasting about four hours each day.

How Can Trauma Therapy Help with Addiction?

As with co-occurring disorders, it is most conducive to recovery to treat both substance use disorders and trauma at the same time. By integrating various treatment methods, individuals are able to address many issues associated with both conditions and learn essential coping mechanisms. This method has proven to improve a client’s performance and recovery time. Furthermore, treating clients simultaneously has been shown to cultivate long-term results such as minimizing relapses and promoting continued recovery.

How Can Trauma Therapy Help with Mental Health

Trauma therapy is an integral part of mental health treatment as it helps those with painful pasts achieve a brighter future. There are several experiential techniques used to treat trauma such as Rapid Resolution Therapy (RRT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy. These types of therapy utilize specific imagery and strategies to replace painful memories of trauma and unhealthy thinking patterns with fresh perspectives and improved outlooks.

Additionally, Equine-assisted Therapy can be highly beneficial to survivors of trauma. This type of holistic intervention allows participants to care for and connect with horses. These innately peaceful animals promote tranquility and empathy. This innovative treatment modality fosters confidence, independence, self-awareness, emotional regulation, and responsibility.
